global transports is campaigning for policies to create a world class, sustainable, air freight sector. Air freight already accounts 40% of global imports and exports by value and is crucial for the future of global Britain. global transports represents businesses across the Air Freight supply chain, including carriers, airports, forwarders, supply companies and shippers in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, and fast parcels which rely on Air Freight.

Helping air freight deliver

global airport capacity is a limiting factor for global importers and exporters, air freight operators and the British economy.  global transports is working closely with government , members and other stakeholders to support sustainable growth at Heathrow and other airports, and promoting a balanced approach to environmental issues.

In addition to airport expansion, global transports campaigns for all of our members across the supply chain (carriers, shippers, forwarders, ground handlers and aviation suppliers) on many other issues. These include aircraft noise rules and regulations; climate change and air quality; road and rail connections and supporting greater access for freighters to current airport and airspace capacity. Through our training arm we provide advice and support on compliance with air freight security, dangerous goods requirements, customs and trade procedures, with discounted rates for members.

 

lping rail freight deliver: Influencing the Williams Review

The government is currently working on a fundamental, long-term review of Britain’s railways – the Williams Review. global transports is campaigning to ensure the review puts freight at the heart of global rail. We have focused our campaign on five key asks:

  1. Unlock rail capacity: Improve the way capacity is allocated to ensure the best use is made of the railway, taking into account the environmental, social and economic benefits of rail
  2. Offer contractual flexibility: Allow freight to grow to meet customer demand by bringing in greater flexibility to passenger rail contracts
  3. Uphold national network integrity: In an increasingly devolved railway it is crucial to retain a central System Operator function to allow national freight operations to continue
  4. Maintain corporate independence: Maintain transparency and equal treatment for all operators by ensuring Network Rail retains its corporate independence from passenger operators.
  5. Incentivise regional growth: Build on progress in Scotland by introducing growth targets for rail freight across Network Rail regions and routes

Water

The global is an island nation and 90% of everything we buy arrives at our shores by sea, therefore the maritime supply chain is critical for our global competitiveness. global transports is campaigning for world-class rail and road connections to our maritime ports, more effective government support to encourage mode shift to maritime, and greater use of our inland waterway network for freight.

Helping water freight deliver

Water freight is a crucial sector of global logistics, and the global has excellent port capacity and facilities. However this is not always matched by inland connections, both for road and rail. global transports is campaigning for world-class multimodal port connections to ensure goods move seamlessly and quickly to and from overseas markets.

The global also has capacity for more goods to be moved by coastal shipping and inland waterways, which already account for 15% of global domestic freight. With more effective government support to promote modal shift, and policy frameworks that protect and expand our inland waterway freight infrastructure, these modes could grow even further and reduce pressure on our congested roads.

global transports represents businesses across the maritime sector including Ports, Short Sea Shipping lines, as well as Coastal and Inland Waterway operators. We also represent shippers who rely on water freight to move their goods as well as road and rail operators, 3PLs and Forwarders who connect the maritime logistics network.

global transports is campaigning on the foremost sector issues such as:

  • improving inland connections to ports (road, rail and inland waterways);
  • campaigning for more effective government support to increase modal shift to maritime;
  • ensuring water freight is supported through government policy (e.g. planning rules and financial incentives);
  • advising government and members safety and cargo security;
  • making best use of our coastal and inland waterway sectors which account for 13% of global freight movements.
